For the adventurous and artistic souls, an elopement in Sedona, Arizona may be just for you! After my recent trip in January 2022, I could not be more in love with a Southwestern elopement destination than I am with this beautiful city; home of the red rock Cathedrals of nature. The landscape of Sedona is insanely breathtaking, but there are some key tips I discovered to make your ceremony reflect that and make the best of it.
The culture of this beautiful city is rugged, yet modern and wildly individualistic with creative expression and such a friendly aura. Everyone I meet is purely themselves and confident that way, extending friendly exchanges and happy to help. It is rich in artistic talent reflecting its Native American roots with a contemporary twist which has made this such a popular wedding destination.
Here are some tips to consider for your elopement in Sedona, Arizona:
Time of day matters for the experience you want
The number one tip I will give you is to get there early! The quality of your pictures depends on this too. The sunlight hits the rocks differently at sunrise and sunset, so consider the kind of mood you want (which I can ABSOLUTELY help with too). The morning sun casts an incredible amber glow on the rocks that will literally warm your heart! You also have more time to wonder in awe as you wander your location and get some amazing photos of you and your hunny.
Another important factor is the time of year you’re going. In the hotter months, sunrise is definitely preferable to beat the heat, but if you want quality time and space, getting there just before sunrise will help you skip the crowds so you aren’t competing with parking and foot traffic. Popular destinations such as Cathedral Rock & Devil’s Bridge come with a small parking lot and huge numbers of people to see its beauty.
Consider a weekday ceremony
Weekday elopements increase your chances of having a more intimate experience and avoiding the super busy crowds that assemble here! The last thing you want is to feel stressed trying to work around people or turn yourself into another tourist attraction. Vendors are also more likely to be available since weekends are more commonly booked.
Opt for local vendors
Local vendors will know all the deets around where, how, when to make your dream elopement a reality. Their familiarity will help you navigate the land, weather, traffic, best places to eat and sleep, and spots you may want to avoid. For example, taking an Uber or taxi to your destination will save you tons of time and coin parking at Cathedral Rock because the lots are small and fill up quickly!
As a destination elopement photographer, location scouting best places to elope & adventure planning is my joy and specialty to make the best and most incredible wedding experience for my clients!
Give yourself time, plan ahead
Such a beautiful and popular place will book quickly! From lodging to restaurants and rentals, consider giving yourself at least four to six months advance.
Stay at least 4-5 days
Your first day is always a travel day. You may be coming in midday or feel exhausted upon arrival. Get settled in your hotel or Airbnb and grab a bite to eat at the most beautiful downtown location called Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village. Take some time to soak it in! If you plan to arrive two or even three days before your ceremony, you won’t be spending the day before your ceremony traveling. Give yourself at least a few days after your elopement adventure to enjoy all the beauty and adventure Sedona has to offer!
Some ideas for your destination…
The most beautiful backdrop for your elopement could be the rocks, a hot air balloon, or a private jeep tour! One of my favorites is Cathedral Rock. The first landing point from the parking is only a ten minute, relatively easy walk and comes with its own view. You will see local nature such as agave and cactus plants. There are many spectacular spots to ascend to depending on what you want to do!
